‘Walkie Talkie,' the City of LondonAnother super tower is underway in the City. In the last few weeks the first two cranes were installed by Canary Wharf Group on the iconic 20 Fenchurch Street project in the City of London, dubbed the ‘Walkie Talkie.’

The cranes will be used for lifting 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcements, along with the concrete and other heavy equipment materials that will be built into the substructure of the building. These will construct the ‘core of the building’ – 37 storeys high to a maximum height of 525 feet.

The skyscraper, supporting 3,000 jobs throughout the construction process, is being jointly developed by Land Securities and Canary Wharf Group, with Canary Wharf Group acting as the construction manager and is scheduled for completion in 2014. When complete, architect Rafael Vinoly’s building will provide topquality office space, offering 360° of unrivalled views. The building aims to target an expected tightening of supply of office space in central London in 2014.

Cormac MacCrann, from Canary Wharf Group says, “It is a very exciting moment for us to see the first cranes climbing above the City of London. These are the first of six cranes which will appear on the City skyline and eventually transform the site into a London icon, topped by a spectacular sky garden.”
